As we head into a new year, it feels like a good time to reintroduce ourselves.

Michael Wilson & Son is a family-run roofing and building contractor based in Brighouse, West Yorkshire.

We were established in 1979 and, more than four decades on, we’re still focused on the same things: doing the job properly, turning up when we say we will, and being easy to work with.

Today, the business is led by Tom, (the Son in Michael Wilson and Son) who joined the company in 1997, and has been part of its day-to-day running ever since. We’re a team of around 18 people — small enough to care, experienced enough to deliver.

What we actually do

In simple terms, our work falls into three main areas:

• Reactive roofing repairs and maintenance

  
  

  Leaks, urgent call-outs and day-to-day roofing issues that need sorting quickly and safely.

• Planned internal fabric and refurbishment works

  
  

  Internal repairs, upgrades and refurbishments in schools, offices and public buildings.

• External building and ground works, plus larger roofing projects

  
  

Most of our work is for schools, colleges, local authorities and other public-sector or commercial clients. Domestic work makes up only a small part of what we do.

How we work

A large proportion of our workload comes through frameworks and long-term agreements. That means we’re used to working within clear criteria around:

• Quality

• Health & safety

We understand the pressures faced by estates teams, business managers and facilities professionals — and we aim to make their lives easier, not harder.

We also invest heavily in our own equipment, which helps us:

• Respond quickly to issues

• Keep control over quality and timescales

• Reduce delays caused by waiting on hired-in kit

  
  

Alongside this, we’re always looking at new technologies, products and methods of work where they genuinely improve safety, efficiency or outcomes for our clients. We’re practical about it — if it adds value, we’ll use it; if it doesn’t, we won’t.

Our approach on site

We’re straightforward and honest in how we deal with people.

If something needs doing, we’ll explain why. If it doesn’t, we’ll say that too.

Health & safety is non-negotiable. We work hard to keep sites safe, tidy and well managed, and our record reflects this. We respect everyone on site — from caretakers and site staff through to senior managers and consultants.

We also understand the need to work around:

• School hours and exam periods

• Occupied buildings

• Sensitive healthcare environments

  
  

More than just a contractor

We’re proud of the team we’ve built and the culture we’ve created. We believe attitude matters just as much as technical skill.

Outside of day-to-day work, we also support local charities including Overgate Hospice, Happy Days and The Kirkwood Hospice — through regular donations and practical support where we can.
