Why we can’t always match the price of a Sole Trader... And why we’re OK with that.

We have a huge amount of respect for sole traders. And, for small, straightforward jobs, or when you have an existing trusted relationship- choosing a one-man band might be the right fit.
But when it comes to roofing work involving height, scale, or risk, or larger commercial projects, public sector buildings, there are important reasons why working with a fully resourced, compliant company may look, and cost, a little different.
Here’s a few of those differences:
1. Safety isn’t optional - It’s the law - we operate in full compliance with UK Health & Safety legislation.
This means we are morally and legally obliged to:
- Provide high-quality PPE for our staff
- Use compliant, safe working-at-height systems (such as scaffolding, edge protection, or access platforms)
- Carry out risk assessments and provide method statements
- Ensure our staff are trained, insured, and working safely at all times.
The most significant cost difference in many commercial roofing jobs comes from ensuring safe access to the roof. For a small job, a ladder may suffice - but for many buildings we work on, that’s simply not safe or legal.
We don’t believe in cutting corners when it comes to our team’s safety or your building’s liability, and neither does the law.
2. We have the capacity to respond quickly and support you long-term:
As a company with trained teams, we can:
- Reduce wait times for planned works
- Respond quickly to urgent issues, including storm damage and leaks
- Return promptly if further work is needed
- Mobilise larger teams for bigger, time-sensitive projects
3. Professionalism, Insurance, peace of mind - working with an established company gives you confidence that:
- We carry full public liability and employer’s insurance
- You’ll receive clear transparent communication
- There’s a whole team behind the job — not just one person
- We're here for the long term, offering continued support and maintenance as needed
4. We're set up for Commercial and Public Sector projects.
If you manage a school, healthcare site, retail unit or any kind of commercial property, you’ll likely require:
RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements)
DBS-cleared personnel
Site induction and permit-to-work compliance
A reliable team able to liaise with facilities managers, architects, or contractors
These are all part of our standard practice.
At Michael Wilson and Son Ltd, we pride ourselves on doing things the right way: safely, legally, and with a level of service that protects both your roof and your reputation. We might not always be the cheapest of your three quotes — but we always aim to offer the best value.
If you'd like advice on your roofing needs or a no-obligation quote for your property, we're here to help.
